Way too logical an answer for these high paid NHL executive types.

Hello Alex,

Why even consider Zack for Marner? Zach is a top-level d-man in the league, is Marner really a top line winger? I'm not convinced of it.

Hey jk ,

I fully understand your point ,Zach is a certified first pairing d-man on any team, the problem being , right now we have a pop-gun offence .

Marner has many qualities and characteristics similar to Panarin. Dealing Zach (and believe me this pains me, I freaking love his game) from what the cbj have to what the cbj need.

Also if Dubas was serious about shoring up Toronto's defence this is somewhat of the solution he needs, because this also clears space for Barrie if he wants an extension.

edit: and hey we will still have space to sign Gardinner to his crazy term and money

Why doesn't Jarmo contact Chevy in The Peg, and see if he'd be interested in trading one of the two big RFAs he has (Laine, or Conner). Those RFAs would sign for much less than Marner or Point, are dynamic, and still give the Jackets a significant kick in the offense.

I'd start with our 2020 (lottery protected) 1st, + any D-man (not Jones/Werenski), + maybe Foudy.

Anaheim loves Edmonton, that was the best thing that could happen to Anaheim. An offer sheet does create bad blood, you can't deny that.

Werenski for Marner?

This would be the typical situation where fans if the two teams cannot agree on a deal because of how they view their own players.

CBJ fans want Werenski for Marner, but Leafs fans' (of which I am one) would want Jones for Marner. CBJ fans say no way it has to be Werenski, so Leafs fans' say "then it is Nyalnder, not Marner"....and CBJ fans laugh their Jackets off and say for Nylander we would be lucky to get Savard.

One would think that there is deal Tobe made, but what do I know? I feel the same way about a Canes / Leafs trade, but 18 months later I am still waiting.

Not unreasonable. What hand is Savard? Our coach is hung up on these things.

Apparently that almost happened at the draft. Columbus wanted pick 4 to take Marner and the Leafs would have taken Werenski at 8 if available. I remember a lot of chatter about that.

Babcock wanted D (although it was Hanafin he wanted)....Hunter, with his London background.....was adamant Marner was the guy.

Accurate in theory, sure.

I could replace Werenski with Jones and Marner with Nylander and it would be a similar argument the other way.

I get that you guys would be reluctant to do Jones for Marner and maybe we talk about adding to even out the deal.

Dropping down from Jones to Werenski though makes this a pretty bad deal.

I think the blogger nailed the problem with offer-sheets.

The compensation is very difficult to take at the high end, AND you are pretty much always going to have to over-pay, probably by quite a bit, if you don't want the other team to match. This all assumes the player wants to play there. As was speculated by Carolina, the agent for Aho could have been playing the Canadiens.

It would definitely screw over the Leafs, who would be forced to make another trade, and likely lose another important piece, but there is very little chance an offer sheet for Marner would be successful unless you are willing to go into dumb numbers.

at minimum I could see a Werensky for Nylander, but one can argue , and Dubas is probably arguing the same thing to Marner's agent, that he played with Tavares, his assist column is probably inflated because Tavares is a finisher.

Maybe I read it wrong, but the part about CBJ using another team's 4 1st acquired previously to then use as compensation in an Offer Sheet is incorrect...compensation of draft picks must be those of the Offer Sheeting team...not someone elses.
If I read it incorrectly, then...Move along, nothing to see here.

You're mistaken about it needing to be the next 4 first rounders. When the compensation reaches 4 firsts, it's allowed to be over the next 5 drafts, signing teams choice of which 4 of the 5.

and that would be a perfectly reasonable argument. In fact, I am sure the Leafs themselves are bringing up that argument in the negotiations.

The thing is, when you watch him play, he is every bit as good as his numbers, maybe better.

THIS is a very important point.
Teams who are stacked with picks could, in theory, make a compelling case of an offer sheet.
Ottawa for instance. BUT The owner is completely broke and these new deals often involve huge bonus money paid up front.
The bonus structure should #1 issue for the owners in the next CBA. Cap it at 20% or something.

Mitch is not signing an offersheet in Columbus, which in turn means he loses all his endorsements which will go in the millions(Intact, Apple, ETC)

Let's be serious. No one is giving up 4 1sts for anyone.
